Per the DOJ allegations described by ADI, the scheme relied on recruiting others to buy guns from Arizona Federal Firearms Licensees in exchange for payment, then reselling those weapons without a license. The indictment alleges Fernando Daniel Castro sold some firearms, including Glock 19 pistols and AK-style rifles, knowing or having reason to believe they would be exported outside the United States.
The consequence is straightforward: Arizona's retail gun market remains a supply node for Mexico-bound trafficking, with straw purchases as the on-ramp. On March 31, 2026, Emmanual Rabena-Velderrain of Mexico pleaded guilty to Attempted Smuggling of Goods from the United States after being stopped on February 17, 2025, with 42 AK-style rifles and forty-two 7.62×39 magazines at the border, ADI reports. Sentencing is set for August 17, 2026, in Tucson.
On April 27, 2026, U.S. District Judge Susan M. Brnovich sentenced Amairany Guadalupe Armendariz Alvarez, of Mexico, to 24 months in prison after a guilty plea to Alien in Possession of a Firearm. In that plea, Alvarez admitted entering on a non-immigrant visa, traveling to Phoenix to pick up three M249 rifles and a Colt pistol, and knowing the guns were destined to be smuggled into Mexico.
Two Phoenix residents, Alejandro Rodriguez and Maricruz Carrillo, pleaded guilty on May 13, 2026, to Felon in Possession of Firearms and Ammunition. On June 24 and July 1, 2026, respectively, Jose Daniel Medina and Juan Jesus Estevez, both of Mexico, pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Smuggle Firearms and Ammunition from the United States, admitting they conspired to obtain guns and ammo in Arizona for smuggling to buyers in Mexico. Both face sentencing on September 11, 2026. A third co-conspirator, Christian Alberto Pereida Ramirez of Nogales, Arizona, has a change-of-plea hearing set for August 12, 2026.
